In Aceh, there are thousands of women became the head of household (pekka), the survivor of conflict who must live in difficult conditions due to the conflict. By 2005, about 53 pekka community based organizations had been established, with a membership of more 1,200 women and 3,000 members of their families, spread all over five main districts ; Aceh Besar, Pidie, Bireun, Aceh Timur and Aceh Barat Daya. They had been able to develop savings and loans activities programs, micro-financial institution, and various micro businesses. This video shows a comprehensive Pekka Program in Aceh.

Since 2001, The Women Headed Household Empowerment Program (PEKKA) has been conducted in 5 districts of Aceh - Aceh Timur, Bireun, Pidie, Aceh Besar and Aceh barat Daya. More than 100 women head of household in this area have organized themselves, fighting for poverty due to long term conflict by developing social economic activities. However, the earthquake and tsunami which devastated Aceh in December 26, 2004, has also killed 13 pekka members, washed hundred of their houses out, and swept out their source of income. The only thing is they're never ending spirit to rise again, struggling in uncertainty, as what we capture in this video.

Anas, Oli and Else are three women head of households in Flores Timur, who are fighting against poverty and local tradition that discriminate them. They are survivor of injustice local tradition in marriage system. Buton, a harbor city in South East Sulawesi became a location of IDPs from conflict in Ambon, Maluku during 1998-2000. Although most people in this area are living in poor condition, they have to share live with the IDPs. On the other hand, it is also not easy for the IDPs to live in the new area. They have to manage their new life in new and different areas with lots of difficulties. Women in IDPs have to shoulder more burden especially who have to taking care of family by their own, as well as dealing with their traumatized situation. The implementation of Operational Military Zone (DOM) in Aceh for more than 10 years has caused miserable life for Acehnese. Thousands of people has died. In April 2004, a delegation of Pekka was invited by the World Bank to the USA. They conducted photo -which they have taken in the past two years for exhibition in the world bank office. They also take the opportunity to visit several women organization in USA who works for women empowerment in order to share and learn each other.

After being organized for more than two years, Pekka groups in several areas including Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, Jawa Barat, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Sulawesi Tenggara, dan Maluku Utara, conducted their regional forum. The forum has effectively used to build their network and introduce their movement to public and local policy maker. Promoting different theme-based on their context-all regional forums have successfully consolidated their network and make them are recognized and well accepted.

26 December 2004, earthquake and tsunami hit Aceh. 171,161 people died and hundreds of thousands lost their property, houses and sources of income. 4 month later, Women headed household (PEKKA) in Bireuen has got back their life. Their economic activity is started, and they are rebuilding their house.
