Activities concerning education on politics were developed based on the needs that were demanded in the field following more than 6 years women headed household groups had organized themselves. It was related to the progress of political system in Indonesia that has given more space to women participation in politics. This activity have just begun in 2008, and at this early stage it was focused on the process of building political awareness among women of women headed household groups and on equipping themselves with capability to actively participate in public domain. Members of the groups were equipped with different tools to get involved in public affairs, for instance, capability to analyze state budget, capability to follow musrenbang (development planning meeting), and to comprehend leadership in political system of Indonesia. There were several activities having been carried out, among others training of trainers (TOT) at local and national levels, political courses at local level, dialogues with government, participation in musrenbang and nomination for village head and legislators.
During this year there had been 23 cadres of women headed household groups who attended TOT on politics at national level and 266 cadres at local level. After attending TOT the cadres then held courses on politics for other women headed household and communities at large in their respective areas. Until the end of 2008 there had been 555 people from women headed household groups and surrounding communities became permanent participants in politics courses that were organized at the local level by TOT alumni. Trainings have yielded quite positive results in increasing participation of women headed household in politics. It is recorded that 44 women had attended musrenbangs for 11 times in their respective areas. Although their agendas could not always be agreed by musrebangs they had been able to haul up the status of their groups as social groups equal to other important groups in the society and to confirm their right to have representatives in musrenbang. In addition, women headed household groups in many areas had also made dialogues with executive and legislative both at national and local levels. Until the end of 2008 there had been 25 dialogues attended by totally 1,059 participants. The dialogues were with various government institutions that were considered able to support these groups in overcoming many problems of their lives; for instance, with education department, local government, law enforcement institutions, cooperative and small-scale business office, local legislative council, women empowerment ministry, etc. One of obvious results of the trainings was the growth of prospective leaders from women headed household, who often appeared in public as leaders of their own communities. Until the end of 2008 there had been 3 women nominating themselves to be village heads, one of them successfully won the election. In addition, for the coming legislative election in 2009, there have been 9 women headed household nominated to be legislators. Although the possibility of being elected and becoming legislators is low, it is a significant achievement for these women who all this time have been marginalized due to belonging to the poorest groups in the society. |
